Yahoo!: A Style Guide for the Internet?

Just when you thought you could run wild and free with your hair blowing in the wind while writing on Facebook, Twitter, you name it online, Yahoo! had to go and ruin it. Not really. We grammar fanatics/online journalists/bloggers/social media communicators appreciate the structure and rules to language, making everything uniform and stately. We embrace style guides as a standard to which writing should be held, whether on paper or online – or at least, we should, right? That being said, “The Yahoo! Style Guide: The Ultimate Sourcebook for Writing, Editing, And Creating Content For The Digital World” will debut this summer in early July at stores everywhere for $21.99. Perhaps this book will at least be a decent starting point for the creation of laws governing online writing, providing some order to the chaos that currently exists.

There are those who disagree, however, not with the creation of a style guide but with who is creating that style guide. Check out http://terriblywrite.wordpress.com/, for example, a site devoted to pointing out and showcasing the grammatical errors committed daily on the Web – often featuring blunders by the online writers at Yahoo.com. These Yahoo! writers make so many transgressions as caught by Terribly Write, it’s questionable as to whether they’d be a credible source for a digital writing style guide at all.

Hey! Thanks for pointing to Terribly Write, a blog that focuses exclusively on the crimes against the language (and against facts) committed by the writers and editors at Yahoo!. Yahoo!’s style guide claims to answer the question: Is it “web site,” “Web site,” or “website.” Funny, but Yahoo! has no idea how to spell it. And it can’t seem to get its own writers to follow its style guide. Here’s just one example at http://terriblywrite.wordpress.com/2010/04/09/is-it-website-web-site-or-web-site-who-knows-not-yahoo/
